Ok, now it really is extremely cold. It got to a low of 24 degrees the other morning and we froze our rears off on guard duty. Of course, the heaters (if you can call them that) are completely inadequate and we wake up to frost coming from our breaths in the morning. This is only happening in the newer tents, aka the Ghetto, since we don't have liners or every last haji mattress in the camp acting as insulation on our walls. I have one spare haji mattress that I use to keep the cold from seeping into my air mattress. We're on guard duty now, and it looks like we'll stay around the LSA until we redeploy. The USO came today, but the only people that could go were the pogues around the basecamp that don't do any real work. Those of us on guard duty, convoys, and area security were stuck doing our job and watching the helicopters take off with the entertainment that was promised to us. Nearly ten months here and the only USO show that makes it to our little camp can't be seen by about 80% of the people who live there because of their work schedules. I won't complain too much because while I was in Baghdad the other day, I was fortunate enough to catch Robin Williams, Blake Clark (the cajun farmer from Waterboy), Leeann Tweeden, and John Elway in a USO show at Camp Liberty (formerly Camp Victory). Good show, but the line for autographs was incredibly long and was populated by the aforementioned pogues who were able to get off of their pseudo jobs and get in line an hour early.
