Operation Iraqi Freedom IV Homecoming
Posted by armyeng93 on Monday, December 04, 2006 (14:31:01) (443 reads)

Well as James mentioned I am on my way home. We safely landed in Kuwait and I am currently at Camp Virginia. My flight leaves early in the AM and I am ready to get this over with. I will be landing in Ft Hood on the 6th instead of the 5th. I appreciate everyones thoughts and prayers over this last year in the armpit of the world. It will be good to get home and see everyone and of course Kenneth. I talked to him the other day and he sounds great. He said that he was looking for me the other day but he couldn't find me because daddy was far far away. I am excited to see how much he has grown. I don't know if I will have time to get to see everyone right away as I still have to work. I will be spending most of my 4 day looking for a place to live for I am a homeless man...lol. I hope that this finds everyone doing well and I will see y'all soon. Love y'all and thanks again for the prayers. MIKE IS COMING HOME.....LOOK OUT

UPDATE: Mike is home now and settled into his new place in Killeen.

I'm happy to report that Mike will be returning to Fort Hood on 5 December. As far as I know, he still has all his fingers and toes.

Operation Iraqi Freedom IV Hello from the sandbox
Posted by armyeng93 on Monday, October 02, 2006 (02:26:48) (414 reads)

So..I hope this finds everyone well. I am officially back in Baghdad and I am fighting the short timers disease. Although the end is near we still find that we have missions to complete and that they will probably carry out all the way to the end of our tour here in the armpit of the world…..lol. I can honestly say that I have enjoyed my time here. I have met some interesting locals who graciously shared their stories of what this place was like before we came over. I must say that this Saddam guy was a freak. I have had the privilege of touring the awesome country side of Iraq and although I would have taken more pictures I figured if you have seen one trash pile you have seen them all….lol. Really though, it is amazing to see how different this culture is to our own. I haven’t seen one house with windows or AC but every roof top seemed to have at least 5 satellites. What is up with that? We had the privilege working side by side with a platoon of Iraqi Army soldiers as they trained on Army carpentry and masonry techniques. That in itself was an adventure. Once you got past the language barrier I must honestly say we had a good time joking around. We introduced them to the wonderful game of American Football and I educated them on the greatest team in the NFL….The Dallas Cowboys….America’s Team. …and of course I had to fill them in the other great football team to follow…..The Fighting Texas Aggies. They soaked up all this knowledge and promised that they would share this with all their family and friends. I feel that I have truly served my country by sharing this awesome knowledge of our rich history.

We did finish our multi million dollar project which is of course why we are back in Baghdad. I will try and post some pics from the jobsite. I must say that I am grateful for this opportunity to learn the finer points of carpentry. I would say that one of the few points of interest that I got out of our Battalion Commanders speech…before I fell asleep…was that for finishing trim alone if you placed every piece end to end it was approximately 54 miles long. Of course that does not include wood used for wall studs, top plates, double top plates, bottom plates, roof trusses, plywood…etc etc. So I find that building 16 company areas, 21 barracks buildings, 2 battalion buildings, and a brigade was quite a feat for 5 months of work. Of course we also put up a clamshell building on the airfield as well. So by now you should be feeling impressed. No…well that’s ok….hahahahaha Well I have said enough for now. Pretty cool that I actually took time to write all this. Did that impress you….hahahaha Oh well, I tried. If I tell you anything else I will be violating OPSEC so that is it for now. Y’all take care and will see y’all in a few months. Bye and miss you and all that other stuff. And James….There better be some big red ice cream waiting when I get there….hahahaha. Take care all.

Mike

Operation Iraqi Freedom IV An Update from Mike
Posted by watts on Tuesday, July 11, 2006 (12:50:57) (417 reads)

Below is an email I got from Mike a couple of weeks ago. I delayed posting it since he was coming here on leave. He arrived last week and spent the holiday with us in College Station. He'll be in the States for a couple of weeks.

I am posting this from the UK, enjoying some Balti cuisine, eating chocolate from the Cadbury factory in Birmingham, and working of course. My civilian work brings me to this part of the world twice a year and apart from the perpetual jet lag I enjoy the visit. I attended a BBQ at my colleague's home on Saturday and managed to perpetuate the stereotype of the hearty American appetite for meat and beer (in my defense, it was forced on me). In the morning, I'll be eating black pudding for breakfast, being the only employee from the States willing to take that challenge. Following this trip, the Aggiefamily will be taking a much needed vacation to Colorado for some off road excursions, hiking, and fishing. Pictures will follow. Speaking of pictures, I have a bunch from Mike that I'll be uploading tonight (UK time) and they should be available by this evening (Texas time). Mike's update email follows:

Quote::
Hey y'all...I am doing geat. I have a hard time getting my internet to stay up over here and lately it has been really really slow. I recieved the package and the card today. The beef jerky as usual doesn't last long..haha...and the picture of Kenneth is greatly appreciated. I was happy to hear that he was able to be there with y'all at the wedding. I think that I will be home around the 5th but I can't be for sure for another day or so. I want to thank everyone for the emails, packages, and prayers. It has been getting pretty hot over here so we switched over to nights. If we could get our military light sets to work right then it wouldn't be a bad thing. Our latest adventure was putting the asphault roofing on with a haji pneumatic staple gun that lasted about 5 minutes then fell apart..haha. So now we are installing it with the ONE hand stapler that fits the few staples that we brought with us. Everything over here is of course metric and our staplers are of course standard. But then again I am getting use to how things go over here. Maybe one day they will get things straight and we can get some decent tools to finish the project. I will probably be in Waco for about a week then will be off on an adventure with Kenneth to go camping and a six flags for the remainder of my time on leave. I am looking forward to seeing everyone on leave. Sorry I haven't updated the website with pics but I had to buy a new computer when my last one bit the dust and the program to resize the pics was on that computer. I can't seem to get anything to download on this wireless internet.
Something about freeing up some air space to allow more people on the network. I hope this email finds everyone doing well. Love you all and thanks again.
Mike

UPDATE: I uploaded 266 photos to Mike's album for your viewing pleasure.

Operation Iraqi Freedom IV Greetings from Operation This Place Sucks
Posted by armyeng93 on Saturday, April 01, 2006 (14:56:06) (553 reads)

Well I hope this finds everyone doing fine. I tried sending some pics to James but the internet keeps freezing up over here. When I get some time I will probably have to send two at a time to update my pics. That or I will burn them on cd and bring them with me on mid tour leave. That of course is still up in the air as far as when I will be back.

Things are warming up over here but hasn't hit top temperatures yet. I can't wait for that to happen! haha. Here in the near future my company will be moving out of the Baghdad area to build a FOB. This will probably take us to the end of the deployment. Really looking forward to this because it will actually give us an opportunity to improve quality of life for other soldiers. Ask James he will tell you how some of these guys are living. I have to admit I have had it good up till now. Of course when we get there we will be in tents and hope to have a/c before it gets to warm over here. I am not sure how the internet will work over there but I will try and keep y'all updated on what I am doing. We are trying to take our satellite with us so we can hook our internet back up down there. Time will tell. I am doing good....just really really tired and looking forward to a break. We as a whole are doing well and looking forward to getting out on our own away from the micro-managing eyes of the Battalion. Thank you all for the emails, pics and packages. It really means alot to know that people are thinking of you. I love you all. To my son, Kenneth, I love you and miss you more than you can imagine. Daddy will see you soon.....
Mike

Operation Iraqi Freedom IV Out of Contact
Posted by watts on Monday, January 23, 2006 (22:48:05) (583 reads)

I've been informed that Mike will be out of contact for a little bit. I can't say exactly when it starts or how long it will be but stay tuned here to see when he'll be back in touch. He will not have phone or email contact for the period he will be gone. No worries if you don't hear from him.

Operation Iraqi Freedom IV Mike is in Iraq
Posted by watts on Thursday, December 29, 2005 (23:23:57) (510 reads)

Here's Mike's first email from Iraq:

Quote::
I am officially in Camp Liberty(victory..same place) Baghdad. I am on the north side. We really don't have anything to do till next year but we are staying busy. We are living in trailers...rooms are kind of small but all in all ok. We have heat and ac in the room and a twin bed. Of course mine is broken so it kind of sags in the middle. I put a piece of plywood under the mattress so it doesn't sag all that much...but since my mattress is about 2 in. thick, I might as well just sleep on the plywood. At least we have a roof over our heads and a warm place to sleep at night.
The food here is awsome. I usually have my choice of oriental stir fry, cheeseburgers, philly cheese steak, hot dogs, chili dogs, and of course the main line.
They also have seperate areas for roast beef..freshly sliced off the bone, and a great salad bar. The drink selection is pretty much anything you can think of including near beer(non alcoholic)....and yes they do have DR PEPPER....yeah for me. Just imagine...this isn't even the fancy DFAC. There is another one on the south side that is even better than this one.
It is cold here in the mornings and everything is a pretty good walk to get to...except the bathrooms which are far enough after a warm shower and cold weather. Well i need to get back to work so I will update later. I love y'all and man do I miss Texas.

Mike

Complaining about your BED?! I slept on a cot for the entire time I was there...in a tent! With no consistent A/C, heat, or power! And I ate T-Rations and MREs until the last three months! Smile

I told Mom to send you an air mattress. I did end up getting one about half way through my tour and it made life much better, except on the cold nights without heat when the air in my mattress sucked the heat out of my body.

Post your wish list for care packages.

Operation Iraqi Freedom IV Merry Christmas from Kuwait
Posted by watts on Sunday, December 25, 2005 (18:41:58) (428 reads)

Here's Mike's first email from Kuwait.

Quote::
Merry Christmas from Kuwait.....yes i am still here.
will be heading out soon though. I have had quite the experience since i have been here. starting with the keyboard i am typing on right now... one of the shift keys doesn't work and i am limited on my time since i am on a free computer.
My adventure started at the airport and the bus ride over to base camp. Haji the bus driver decided that he would tailgate and cause about 50 near accidents with the bus in front of us. He also felt it necessary that he hit every bump and pothole on the hour and a half ride here. aside from the freak weather and the long lines to everything you do on this camp...it is not all that bad. we had some great close quarter marksmanship and convoy training. alot of the info we are recieving about our area of opporation is not sounding to pretty however....asr iris is apparently in our area of operation...if you want to know about it i am sure james will put this email on his website and elaborate. aside from the kuwait crud...i am healthy....even with eating chow hall food. the living conditions here are good and from what i am hearing the conditions where we are going is even better. Hopefully i will have more time to call and answer email. I am trying to work a deal with my building mates to get wireless internet hooked up in our building.
thank you for all the emails wishing a merry christmas. It has been raining off and on for the last 3 days ...which isn't that bad aside from dodging all the lakes that have formed. It is a heck of alot better that the sand storm we had.
My address in baghdad is

SPC Wyatt, Michael
C Co 62nd Engineer Battalion
Unit# 43020
APO AE 09344-3020

hope all is well with everyone and i love and miss y'all. Have a Merry christmas and a happy happy new year. Kenneth I love you boy...make sure your mommy gives you a big hug and kiss for me....I will hopefully post some pics soon. Till next time

Mike

Route Irish (not Iris) is one of the most dangerous routes in Baghdad, connecting Baghdad International Airport (BIAP) with the route leading into the Green Zone. When I travelled that route, I can remember car bombs and IEDs almost daily. Fortunately, the route was wide and fast so we drove at insane speeds and kept traffic off of us with a warning shot. I was never hit there.

Mike, remember you own the roads over there and straddling lanes is okay when you have an M2 in the gunner's hatch.

Operation Iraqi Freedom IV Aggiefamily sends another off to Iraq
Posted by watts on Tuesday, December 20, 2005 (01:31:57) (375 reads)

My little brother headed off to Iraq recently and will be posting his news here either through emails to me or, if he can figure out how to do it, through the website. I'll also be posting his photos once he starts sending them to me. You'll be able to find those here: Mike's Iraq Vacation

For OPSEC (Operation Security) reasons, I've delayed this announcement and will delay posting news from him when I deem it necessary. Stay tuned to this site for more news on the latest Aggiefamily member to serve in combat.
