Stuff I find while surfing the Web Google in the news again
Posted by watts on Wednesday, August 24, 2005 (10:30:09) (302 reads)

More Google innovations to report. Their Desktop search tool has a new version in beta. This new version includes a few new features, to include the Sidebar, and what appears to be some old plugins integrated as features. They are also now in the IM battle with Google Talk. Not to be confused with Google Talk the interesting game. Google Talk the IM client uses your Gmail account and allows for text and voice chatting.

Stuff I find while surfing the Web Sean Penn Articles
Posted by watts on Tuesday, August 23, 2005 (10:56:39) (360 reads)

While I don't always agree with his politics, I enjoyed reading his first two articles on his visit to Iran. They are articulate and offer an interesting view into life in the Islamic Republic of Iran. I look forward to reading the rest of his series (five parts are promised) since, as some of you may know, I've had a lot of exposure to Iranians. I'll post the new links each day as they become available. Check back.

Stuff I find while surfing the Web Spell Check for your browser
Posted by watts on Thursday, July 07, 2005 (23:33:18) (321 reads)

I'm always looking for the next great plugins for my Firefox browser. My list of must have extensions continues to grow. If you're looking for a spell checker for those text boxes on a web page, I think I've found the solution...and I haven't forgotten about IE either.

IESpell (get it here) is an addon for Internet Explorer. It's a completely standalone spell checker for your browser and is spyware/adware free. And it's cheap...i.e. FREE.

Spellbound (get it here) is an extension for Firefox that also checks spelling in browser text boxes. It requires a separate download of your preferred language's dictionary and includes a personal dictionary. It's not as simple to install as most extensions but the instructions on their installation page are easy to follow. Follow the Elevated Privilages instructions. If you have to install three different things, you did it right. It requires the Mozilla spell check libraries, the dictionary, and the Spellbound extension. This free too.

Stuff I find while surfing the Web US Marine Corps Commemorative Coin
Posted by watts on Thursday, July 07, 2005 (22:51:40) (345 reads)

So the Marine Corps is getting their very own commemorative coin in celebration of their 230th birthday. It's pretty nice and being the son and grandson of Former Marines, I think it's much deserved. But, what the heck? The Army is 230 years old too (and 5 months older than the Marines) but we don't get our own coin. We do get a lovely dog tag looking thing but the US Mint didn't see fit to honor us. How about a letter writing campaign to get a coin? And a design contest. Anyone interested?

Stuff I find while surfing the Web Google stuff

Google never ceases to amaze me. They acquired Keyhole Software last year and integrated their satellite mapping into Google Maps. They have now taken their GIS software and made it available for free. It takes a mosaic of satellite photos and stitches them together to give you a view of just about the entire earth. To make it even better, they added terrain and building data for many places so you can zoom in, pan, and tilt the map to give you a 3D view.

Download it and check it out. Be forewarned, it takes a beefy PC and graphics processor to use it so check the specs first.

Google IPO = $85 per share
GOOG stock price now = $302 per share

I wish I had the money at the time to invest in a few shares.

Stuff I find while surfing the Web MSPaint
Posted by watts on Monday, May 23, 2005 (15:02:06) (310 reads)

This artwork is phenominal considering what this guy used to draw it. He spent 500 hours drawing it in MSPaint. The special effects (blurring) had to be done in Photoshop.

Stuff I find while surfing the Web Another Google Feature
Posted by watts on Friday, May 20, 2005 (12:52:51) (294 reads)

Google has added a personalized homepage to its growing list of features. You can add news, weather, stocks, and gmail, among others to your homepage. Future options will include universal RSS which will bring RSS aggregation to your homepage, like My Yahoo.

Stuff I find while surfing the Web An activity for the kiddos

Here's a link to a site that gives you downloadable paper toy projects. Just download the PDF, print it with your color printer, and follow the instructions. I'll be trying it with the kiddo.
